Windsor lives with royalty next door — the Castle’s round tower above the high street, the Long Walk running dead straight for two and a half miles into the Great Park, Eton’s schoolboy tailcoats across the bridge, and the Thames sliding past it all. Demand never sleeps: hotels run £150-220 a night, and short lets near the centre list at £140-200, spiking hard around state occasions.

If you’ve been looking at Holiday Swap as a way to travel more affordably from Windsor, you’ve probably noticed some friction — a swipe-driven app experience, listings with minimal vetting, and premium tiers that reintroduce the costs the app claims to remove. For Windsor-based members specifically, Windsor homes carry some of the strongest year-round visitor demand in Britain, yet the platforms’ pricing and matching treat them like any other Home Counties address.

That’s why a growing number of Windsor travellers are looking for alternatives that are simpler, more curated, and designed with UK members in mind. SwapSpace is one of those alternatives — and it works quite differently.

Holiday Swap is a vacation exchange and booking platform founded in 2018 by James Asquith, the youngest person to travel to every country in the world. The platform has grown to over one million users across 185 countries and achieved a $400 million valuation. Holiday Swap uses a hybrid model combining home exchange with traditional accommodation booking. Members can swap homes for free or book stays at partner properties. The platform differentiates itself through a social media-style interface with swiping and matching features. Holiday Swap also has a commercial aviation subsidiary, positioning itself as a broader travel company beyond just home exchange.

Holiday Swap works well for some travellers, but it’s not the right fit for everyone — particularly for people based in Windsor or hoping to visit it.

Listing quality is thin. Holiday Swap’s free, swipe-style onboarding means anyone can list in seconds — and it shows. Sparse photos, one-line descriptions, and inactive accounts are common. For a town this famous, the app’s Windsor inventory is remarkably sparse. Browsing for quality homes means wading through a lot of noise.

Minimal vetting means minimal trust. Handing your keys to a stranger requires confidence in the platform standing behind them. Holiday Swap’s light-touch verification doesn’t provide much of it, which is why many Windsor homeowners hesitate to complete a first swap.

The free app has paid walls where it matters. The headline is free swapping, but premium tiers gate the features members actually need. What looks like the budget option ends up resembling the subscription platforms it claims to disrupt — without their community depth or their vetting.

What Is Holiday Swap?
