Durham is England compressed to a single view — the Norman cathedral and castle sharing a wooded peninsula above the River Wear, a UNESCO site since the list began, cobbled banks dropping to rowing eights on the water, and a college city keeping the streets young. Hotels run £110-150 a night, and short lets in the centre list at £100-140.

If you’ve been looking at HomeLink as a way to travel more affordably from Durham, you’ve probably noticed some friction — an annual fee of around £115, an expectation of simultaneous exchanges that are hard to coordinate, and a platform that feels a generation behind. For Durham-based members specifically, the platforms overlook the North East almost entirely, leaving Durham members undervalued despite holding homes beside one of Europe’s great medieval views.

That’s why a growing number of Durham travellers are looking for alternatives that are simpler, more curated, and designed with UK members in mind. SwapSpace is one of those alternatives — and it works quite differently.

HomeLink is one of the oldest home exchange organisations in the world, founded in 1953. With over 70 years of history, it operates in more than 58 countries with a network of experienced home swappers. HomeLink uses a traditional annual membership model and focuses on direct reciprocal exchanges rather than points-based systems. The platform is run by local representatives in each country who provide personal support to members. HomeLink charges an annual membership fee that varies by country, typically ranging from £95-£135 in the UK. The platform prides itself on its personal touch and long-standing community of dedicated home exchangers.

HomeLink works well for some travellers, but it’s not the right fit for everyone — particularly for people based in Durham or hoping to visit it.

Simultaneous exchange is hard to coordinate. HomeLink’s traditional model expects both households to travel at the same time. Aligning school terms, work schedules, and flight prices between two families is genuinely difficult. Durham’s academic households run on university terms — precise, immovable, and rarely mirrored by another family’s diary. A credit system removes the need for that alignment altogether.

The platform shows its age. HomeLink has operated since 1953, and parts of the experience feel like it. The interface, search, and messaging lag well behind modern platforms, and the membership demographic skews older — which shapes both the homes on offer and the pace of responses for Durham members.

The annual fee buys a small network. At around £115 per year, HomeLink costs real money for a community much smaller than the big platforms. Members in Durham often find only a handful of realistic matches for their preferred destinations and dates.

What Is HomeLink?
